As the 2013-2014 school year comes to a close, the garden is coming into full bloom and growth. This last trimester was an exciting time to garden as students worked to plant the seeds and starts that make our garden lush and fruitful. The tomato and basil beds are in, there are a couple dozen types of lettuce growing, and kale is already being munched on by eager students. Students and volunteers have planted an assortment of winter and summer squash, gourds, and pumpkins that we can look forward to when school begins again. In the Garden Leadership Enrichment class, students did a phenomenal job of planting over 40 varieties of plants, transplanting and planting tomatoes, and tending to the garden. They truly became mini-Master Gardeners! On VIP Day, May 30th, over 75 adults and even more children stopped by the First Annual Springwater Plant Swap. Parent and student gardeners brought extra plants from their gardens to exchange with each other for new varieties of vegetables, ornamentals, and flowers. Even those who didn’t have anything to share were able to bring home a few plants to start their own home gardens. I am looking forward to the Plant Swap next year! This Springwater School garden will continue to grow and flourish this summer and I encourage you all to come out and enjoy its beauty and fruitfulness. As one Salmon students said, “It’s like a free grocery store!” Instead of going to the farmer’s market or grocery store, consider coming out to the garden and harvesting your food for the week! I, Kaci Rae, will be out in the garden throughout the summer, tending and harvesting to it. I look forward to seeing you, your student, and their friends out in the garden with me as well. Thank you to all the volunteers who supported the Plant Swap and garden activities this year. The garden has grown and flourished so much with your help. Thank you also to the non-profit Food Waves, who provided the school with plant starts, seeds, new tools and gloves, as well as began the first phase of garden workshops at Springwater. We look forward to seeing you all out in the garden this summer! |
